SYNOPSIS

At Taft High School in the South Bronx, the first school in the country to implement metal detectors alongside its prison-like aesthetic, a new era of change and empowerment has arrived. In the same cafeteria where drug paraphernalia was once a common sight, worn wrestling mats now signal the beginning of a movement. Here, amidst mismatched workout gear and hand-me-down sneakers, twenty girls embark on an extraordinary journey—the inaugural season of Taft High School Girls Wrestling.

LUCHA transcends the sport of wrestling; it is a story of resilience and the indomitable spirit of young women who dare to pioneer change. Their triumphs are not measured in championships but in the defiance of doubt and their challenging environment, the declaration of independence, and the mastery of self, both on and off the mat.

Captured over three years in raw verité style, LUCHA blends practices, matches, and intimate glimpses into the lives of four remarkable young women: Chrishirley, battling housing insecurity; Nyasia, struggling academically; Alba, a recently arrived immigrant from the Dominican Republic; and Mariam, navigating her cultural heritage alongside personal ambitions. Their stories are of perseverance amidst adversity, a rallying cry for empowerment, and a vivid illustration of sport’s transformative power in shaping destinies.

LUCHA is more than a film; it’s a call to embrace courage, defy convention, and forge a path to greatness against all odds.
